The wife of Somaliland’s Foreign Minister, Abdirahman Dahir Adan, has been charged in the United States in connection with one of the largest COVID-era fraud investigations in American history.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Muna Wais Fidhin, 44, was indicted in Minnesota on ten criminal counts, including wire fraud, federal programs bribery, and money laundering for her alleged role in the massive Feeding Our Future fraud scheme. Prosecutors say the case involved the theft of hundreds of millions of dollars intended for child nutrition programs during the pandemic.

U.S. authorities stated that Fidhin became the 75th defendant charged in the case. The broader scandal has been described by prosecutors as the largest COVID fraud case in the country.
The case has generated political attention in Somaliland, where Abdirahman Dahir Adan serves as Foreign Minister under President Abdirahman Cirro’s administration. Critics have questioned whether the allegations could damage Somaliland’s international image, especially as the administration continues to seek wider diplomatic recognition.

Some commentators have also speculated so far that money from fraud networks may have been used to support lobbying campaigns in Washington aimed at Somaliland recognition, including outreach to Republican influencers and public figures. No official U.S. court filing has alleged such lobbying links in this case.
Recent international media discussions have noted that some conservative commentators, including Rep Ted Cruz, Tomi Lahren, who works for Fox News and other Republican aligned voices, have publicly spoken about Somaliland in geopolitical debates. However, there is no verified evidence tying them to this fraud case.
